The 1st International Workshop on Underwater Communication Networks

Important Dates
Paper due: April 1, 2013
Author Notification: April 15, 2013
Camera-ready due: May 8, 2013

Workshop Date: July 2, 2013
In conjunction with the 5th International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks from July 2 to July 5, 2013 in Da Nang, Vietnam

For more information:
Underwater communication networks are envisioned to enable applications for oceanographic data collection, pollution monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster prevention, assisted navigation and tactical surveillance applications. Multiple unmanned or autonomous underwater vehicles, equipped with underwater sensors, will also find application in exploration of natural undersea resources and gathering of scientific data in collaborative monitoring missions. To make these applications viable, there is a need to enable underwater communications among underwater devices. Underwater sensor nodes and vehicles must possess self-configuration capabilities, i.e., they must be able to coordinate their operation by exchanging configuration, location and movement information, and to relay monitored data to an onshore station. This workshop will support an opportunity for industry and academic professionals to discuss the latest issues and progress in the area of underwater communication networks.

Technical Topics
  - Architecture design for underwater sensor networks
  - Medium access control
  - Routing and forwarding
  - Energy conserving network protocols
  - Localization and synchronization
  - Hardware and software for low power consumption
  - Acoustic or laser communications for UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle)
  - Security for underwater communications
  - Channel modeling and simulations
  - Applications of Underwater Communication Networks
  - Sea trials

All papers must be submitted electronically, in PDF format, and uploaded on EDAS. The direct link for paper submission is There are two options for the submissions, either a full paper or a short paper. We decided to allow the submission of short papers in order to accommodate the most recent research outcomes. The submissions should be formatted with single-spaced, double-column pages using at least 10 pt (or higher) size fonts on A4 or letter pages in IEEE style format. The maximum number of pages is 6 for full papers and 2 for short papers. Detailed formatting and submission instructions will be available on the conference web site (

Submitted papers will be reviewed by the workshop Program Committee and judged on originality, technical correctness, relevance, and quality of presentation. All accepted papers will appear in the IEEE Xplore Digital library and will be indexed by SCOPUS and EI Compendex only if at least one of the authors registers at the full registration rate and attends to present the paper. Also, extended versions of selected papers will be published in the following international journals (SCIE-indexed) as a special section for the ICUFN 2013.
